The short answer
Expect at least occasional string-trimmer work unless the mower can safely place its cutting disc over a flat, level border. Walls, raised beds, fences and drop-offs normally leave an uncut strip because the blade sits inside the mower body for safety. An “edge mode” may improve the result without eliminating that strip.
Why robot mowers leave an edge
The blade cannot extend beyond the protective housing. When a wheel or bumper reaches a wall first, the cutting disc remains several inches away from the grass edge. The same safety margin protects feet, pets and objects from an exposed blade.
Navigation precision is only one part of the result. A mower can follow the mapped boundary accurately and still leave grass because its physical cutting disc is inset from the chassis.

How to compare edge performance
Do not rank mowers from a single product photo. Ask for the distance from the outer body to the cutting disc, then compare that measurement with the borders around your own lawn. A machine can perform very differently along flat pavers than along a fence.
- Which parts of the lawn meet flat paving, walls, fences or raised beds?
- Can the mower safely drive over the flat borders?
- Does the manual specify a minimum clearance from a wall or drop-off?
- Is the cutting disc centered, offset or able to shift sideways?
- Does “edge mode” describe the route, the hardware—or both?
- How much manual trimming would still be acceptable to you?

How to reduce manual trimming
- Add a flat mowing strip beside fences or raised beds so a mower wheel can travel over it.
- Keep pavers level with the soil and wide enough for the model’s required overlap.
- Remove low branches and plants that hang into the mower’s perimeter route.
- Map a conservative boundary first, then adjust only after observing supervised cycles.
- Never reduce a safety margin beside a pool, road or drop-off just to improve the cosmetic edge.
The honest expectation: a good robot mower can remove most routine mowing. It may not remove the string trimmer from your shed.
