Total cost of ownership

How much does a robot lawn mower really cost?

The sticker price is only the beginning. Build a realistic ownership estimate—then compare it with what you would pay a lawn service.

Short answer: a robot mower may reduce long-term mowing expense when it replaces frequent paid visits, but it is not maintenance-free. Count the mower, installation accessories, blades, connectivity, battery or repair risk—and remember that a basic robot cut is not identical to a full landscaping visit.

The purchase price is not the ownership cost

A low sticker price can become less attractive if the mower needs extra hardware, a paid cellular plan or frequent attention. A more expensive mower can be economical if it reliably handles the whole property and replaces a service you already pay for. The right comparison is total cost over the period you expect to own it.

Recurring and future costs

Blades and consumables

Small pivoting blades are wear items. Replacement frequency depends on acreage, debris, grass and operating hours, so use the manufacturer's schedule as a starting point and price the correct blade kit.

Connectivity and subscriptions

App access may be included while optional cellular or theft-tracking features may require a plan. Confirm which functions still work without a subscription.

Battery, repairs and shipping

A repair reserve makes the comparison more honest. Ask whether the battery is user-replaceable, what the warranty excludes, where service is performed and who pays shipping for a heavy machine.

Robot mower vs lawn service

The calculator compares mowing expense, but the services are not identical. A robot maintains grass through frequent small cuts. A lawn crew may also edge, blow hard surfaces, trim inaccessible areas, collect debris and notice irrigation or turf problems. If you would still hire those services, compare the robot only with the portion of the bill it can realistically replace.

Use local numbers: enter a real service quote and the number of visits in your mowing season. The defaults above demonstrate the calculator; they are not claims about U.S. average prices.

When is a robot mower worth it?

It is financially easier to justify when you currently pay for frequent mowing, expect to stay in the home for several years, and the mower can cover the lawn without repeated rescues. It may be a weaker fit when you mow easily yourself, need substantial edging and cleanup anyway, or the yard requires expensive modifications.

Frequently asked questions

How many years should I use?

Use the period you realistically expect to keep both the mower and the property. Five years is useful for comparison, but it is not a promised product life.

Should electricity be included?

You can add an electricity estimate to annual maintenance if desired. Consumption varies by mower, lawn area, terrain, charging efficiency and schedule.

Does the calculation include a replacement battery?

Not separately. Add an annual reserve that reflects the battery price and warranty for the model you are considering.

What if I mow the lawn myself?

Set lawn service cost to zero. The calculator will show the robot's cash cost, but deciding whether saved time is worth that amount remains personal.

Now match the machine to your yard

Cost only matters if the mower can handle your lawn size, slopes, trees and narrow passages.
