Is your yard suitable for a robot lawn mower?

Most lawns can work—but slopes, tree cover, narrow routes and unprotected drops determine which machine you need and what must change first.

Short answer: a robot mower suits most maintained residential lawns when it has a safe continuous route, a practical charging location and specifications that exceed the yard's hardest condition. Difficult does not mean impossible—but it usually means a more capable and expensive mower.
Good fit

Clear routes, defined edges, manageable grades and reachable outdoor power.

Fit with preparation

Roots, holes, mixed tree cover, separated zones or an edge that can be protected.

Poor fit for now

Unprotected drops, inaccessible grass, very tight routes or terrain beyond model limits.

Measure the grass—not the property

Start with the actual mowable area. Add front, rear and side lawns, then subtract the house, driveway, pool, patios and garden beds. Choose a mower with coverage above that result rather than buying at the exact published limit.

Walk the route the mower must travel

The average lawn is less important than its hardest recurring section. Measure the steepest grade, inspect turns on slopes and note roots, holes, soft soil and abrupt transitions. AWD can help with traction, but it cannot correct an unsafe drop or terrain outside the manufacturer's limit.

The right mower is selected by the hardest part of the route—not the easiest stretch of grass.

Trees change the navigation choice

Open lawns are usually friendly to RTK/GPS positioning. Dense canopy and tall buildings can weaken satellite correction, so a vision- or LiDAR-led mower—or a hybrid that can use several sensors—may be a safer starting point.

Measure gates, corridors and zone connections

A mower must physically fit with room to navigate, not merely squeeze through once. Measure gates, side-yard passages and the route from every zone back to the charger. Check the exact model's minimum passage requirement.

Plan the charging station before buying

Look for level, well-drained ground with suitable outdoor power and enough clear approach space. Consider Wi-Fi or cellular coverage, theft exposure and whether the route home remains usable after rain. “Wire-free” removes a perimeter cable; it does not remove the charger, mapping or site preparation.

When a robot mower may not be the answer

Pause if essential areas can only be reached by stairs, the lawn contains unprotected water or drops, the required passages are narrower than available models, or the terrain exceeds published limits.
