How to choose a wire-free robot lawn mower

The right mower is not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. It is the one whose navigation, traction, coverage and support fit your actual yard.

Start with five facts: mowable lawn area, tree cover, steepest slope, layout complexity and the places where a mower could get stuck. Use those conditions to choose the navigation and drive system before comparing extras such as mowing patterns or voice control.

1. Measure your mowable lawn

Manufacturers rate models by lawn coverage, but homeowners often begin with the size of the entire property. That can push you toward a larger and more expensive mower than you need. Add the front, back and side lawns, then subtract surfaces the mower will never cut.

Do not choose a mower at its absolute advertised limit when the property is complex. Multiple zones, slopes and frequent obstacle avoidance can increase working time and charging cycles.

Technology names alone are not enough. “Vision” may mean full positioning on one model and only obstacle detection on another. Ask what the mower does when its primary positioning source becomes unavailable.

3. Account for trees and structures

A single tree in an open yard is different from mowing beneath a continuous canopy beside a tall house. Walk the entire route and identify sections with limited sky. Also check whether the charging station and any external antenna can be placed in suitable locations.

4. Compare slope rating and traction

Manufacturers may express slope ability as a percentage or in degrees. These are not interchangeable: a 45% grade is approximately 24°, not 45°. Always compare like with like.

A published maximum is normally an operating limit under suitable conditions, not a promise for wet grass, exposed roots or a drop at the bottom of the hill. AWD can improve traction on demanding terrain, while simpler drive systems may be sufficient for flatter lawns and cost less.

Important: measure the steepest part the mower must actually traverse, including routes between zones and the approach to its charging station.

5. Map zones, passages and problem spots

Coverage tells you how much grass a mower is designed to maintain. It does not tell you whether it can reach that grass. Measure narrow corridors, gates and paved transitions. Note disconnected lawns, islands, play equipment and borders beside ponds, steps or retaining walls.

For uneven ground, look beyond the wheel count. Ground clearance, wheel design, turning behavior and the mower's ability to recover after slipping all matter.

6. Calculate the total ownership cost

Children, pets and yard safety

Obstacle detection, lift sensors and blade stopping systems can reduce risk, but no autonomous mower should be treated as supervision-free around children or animals. Follow the manufacturer's operating instructions, keep the lawn clear of small objects and avoid schedules when the yard is actively being used.

When a boundary-wire mower may still be better

A wire-free mower is not automatically the right answer. A mature boundary-wire system may be preferable when virtual positioning is unreliable, the lawn has unusual edges, or local dealer support is more important than fast setup. An honest “not yet” can be better than forcing new technology into the wrong property.

Frequently asked questions

Is my yard suitable for a robot lawn mower?

It may be if the mower can reach every mowing zone, handle the steepest grade and navigate the available sky view, boundaries and obstacles. Use the most difficult section—not the easiest—as your test.

Do wire-free mowers work under trees?

Some do, but performance depends on canopy density and navigation design. Vision- or LiDAR-led systems may suit dense cover, while hybrid RTK models can fit yards that are mostly open with some shaded zones.

How much capacity should I buy?

Choose above your calculated mowable area when the yard is steep, complex or divided into many zones. Avoid paying for extreme acreage that your lawn does not need.

Is AWD necessary?

Not for every yard. AWD is most relevant for steep, uneven or traction-limited ground. A flatter, simple lawn may be served well by a less expensive system.

How long does a robot mower last?

There is no single dependable lifespan for the category. Battery cycles, weather exposure, cleaning, parts availability and manufacturer support can matter as much as the initial hardware.
