A 40° slope is far steeper than a 40% grade. Percent grade compares vertical rise with horizontal run; degrees describe the angle itself. Useful reference points:

How to measure your yard's slope
- Choose the steepest section the mower must cross.
- Measure a horizontal run—10 feet makes the calculation simple.
- Measure the vertical rise over that distance.
- Divide rise by run and multiply by 100. A 3-foot rise over a 10-foot run equals a 30% grade.
- Repeat on the route to the charging station and between separate mowing zones.
Why the real limit can be lower
Published ratings are best treated as ceilings. Wet grass can reduce grip. Loose soil can move beneath the wheels. Roots, holes and sharp transitions can lift a wheel or ground the chassis. A side slope can also be harder to manage safely than a straight climb.
The bottom of the slope matters too. A pond, retaining wall, road or drop-off requires a larger safety margin than a gentle runout onto level grass.
Safety rule: do not plan normal operation at the advertised maximum beside water, traffic, steps or an unprotected drop. Follow the manufacturer's clearance and operating instructions.
When AWD is worth paying for
AWD is most valuable when steepness is combined with uneven ground, changing direction on the incline or frequent wet conditions. It can also improve recovery when a wheel crosses a depression. For a mostly flat lawn with one short, manageable incline, paying for an extreme-slope platform may add cost and weight without solving another problem.
Drive system is only one part of traction. Tire pattern, mower weight, wheelbase, ground clearance and control software also affect how calmly a mower climbs and turns.

- Measure the steepest section in both percent and degrees.
- Check side slopes as well as straight climbs.
- Inspect roots, holes, loose soil and wet areas.
- Confirm the route back to the charging station.
- Leave additional safety margin near drops, water and roads.
- Verify the slope rating for the exact model variant in writing.
- Read the return terms before running the mower outdoors.
